Veteran actor Edmund Chen is Singapore's busiest male artiste. From acting to hosting and business ventures, Edmund has his fair share in them. Currently also engaged in overseas entertainment scene, filming assignments are endless for him. One may wonder, is Edmund, the father of two, a superhero? His wife, veteran MediaCorp actress Xiang Yun once said: "I have three kids at home!" That explains everything. Edmund is always curious about new things and adventurous, just like a child.
Recently, Edmund breaks into Hollywood and landed a role in new movie "Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li". When filming ended, it was like waking from a dream.
"It was a fantastic feeling, really fantastic! I couldn't really believe it when I first got this role. I didn't go for any auditions and was given the role straightaway. Before I could even react, I was already being sent to Thailand. Everything happened in a whiz; it was like a dream. Now, it feels a little bit more real," Edmund said.
To display his best performance in his debut Hollywood movie, Edmund engaged a fighting champion from China to train him in it. The one emotion he felt the most throughout the months of filming was: fear. He has to wake up as early as 5 a.m. to start preparations and a doctor would be waiting in his room everyday to give him medical treatments; it was strenuous and intense filming.
At one point of time, he had to question himself the reason he put himself through such torture. However, he managed to hang in with encouragements from the martial arts director who told him: Treat this as your last assignment before you leave the world.
Edmund played Chun Li's father, who imparted excellent fighting skills to his daughter, in the movie; however, he throws out immediately the idea of teaching his daughter to fight in reality. Edmund said his daughter is very bubbly and active, so he would need to teach her to quiet down instead."I always advise my daughter: in the event when you meet baddies, be realistic. Call the police!"
Currently broadcasting on Channel U is drama series "Perfect Cut 2" where Edmund takes the role of a plastic surgeon. When asked of his views on the trend of artistes seeking plastic surgery, he said: "In contrary to common belief, plastic surgery, for all you know, may not make you prettier. It is okay for one to have some imperfections; I accept that as a kind of charm. I am very receptive of one's shortcomings. I'll see the shortcoming as a person's attractiveness."
However, he added, "I will never go for plastic surgery! It is very tedious on you after the surgery. Alterations, maybe."
With his boyish looks and ruddy complexion, 46-year-old Edmund is often referred to as the "undying legend" of the local entertainment scene; some can't help but doubt if he has gone through some form of plastic surgery. He said, "I'm actually changing everyday, just that the changes are minimal. Perhaps I already look 40 years old when I was six! The most important thing is to keep oneself happy always."
